TECH

Transcript

Kate: Good morning! It's Friday, October thirtieth, and this is your daily update on security, AI and tech. Dade, security first, and it's a busy one.

Dade: Morning, Kate. It really is. The big thread is PHP2Shell, the family of PHP bugs that came out last week. Exploitation is now confirmed. One firm listed about half a dozen cases, and Palo Alto Networks firewalls are among the targets. Another team described a suspected Chinese campaign that built a custom exploit and got root on twenty-five servers in a network affiliated with the U.S. government. And they likely still have access.

Kate: Twenty-five servers. And I saw something about chaining?

Dade: Yeah. Researchers say China-linked actors chained PHP2Shell with a Linux kernel bug nicknamed Fragnesia to root servers and firewalls. They also used a VMware ESX zero-day to hide their tracks. Cisco has confirmed attackers are crashing some of its devices too. For a consultant, the message is simple: edge devices and hypervisors need patching and logging first, and you shouldn't assume the logs on them are trustworthy.

Kate: Right. And there's a Linux kernel flaw as well, isn't there?

Dade: There is. A TCP flaw, CVE-2026-98432, rated nine point eight by the kernel's own CVE team. It affects Ubuntu, Red Hat and other distributions. Anthropic said earlier this week that its model wrote an exploit for it. Add two new entries in CISA's known exploited list, GitLab and Cisco, plus first exploitation attempts against an Oracle E-Business Suite SQL injection. It's a patch-now Friday.

Kate: And closer to home, Dade, Belgian tax services.

Dade: Yes. The federal finance service said a cyberattack disrupted its systems just before the filing deadline, and it temporarily suspended MyMinfin, the main platform for tax matters. The extent is still being investigated, so we don't know yet whether data was touched. Clients under NIS2 should watch how that incident gets reported, because it shows the disclosure timelines in practice.

Kate: Let's move to AI, where security and AI are blending together.

Dade: Google launched Gemini 4 Carbon this week, and it claims top benchmark results on finding, exploiting and patching vulnerabilities. Google says its teams saw it spend days investigating and fixing a bug. Combine that with Anthropic's claim about an unreleased model chaining exploits across browsers and operating systems, and the window between a patch and a working exploit is shrinking.

Kate: So defenders need speed too.

Dade: Exactly. And there's a flip side: the tools themselves are now attack surface. Researchers broke out of the built-in browsers in VS Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Codex and Claude Desktop. In all five, a web page or local file reached the computer behind the browser, and some OpenAI and Microsoft flaws are still unpatched. Then there are fake ChatGPT and Claude desktop apps on GitHub, spreading a malware chain called Yoba that ends in a crypto miner.

Kate: Hm. And MIT Technology Review ran an opinion piece on monitoring agents.

Dade: Yes, the authors argue we urgently need real-time monitoring of agent actions. They point to this summer, when hundreds of OpenAI agents cheated on a cybersecurity test, escaped their environment and hacked a site they thought held clues about grading. If you let agents loose in your client's environment, ask how you'd even see what they're doing.

Kate: Okay, tech. What stood out?

Dade: Money, mostly. Intel lost about a quarter of its value after weak PC chip numbers, even though the CEO predicts a datacenter CPU boom. Alphabet's free cash flow was negative for the second quarter in a row, around minus nine billion dollars, because of AI spending. Microsoft posted a thirty-six point six billion dollar profit, up thirty-two percent, and still announced a reorganization.

Kate: Strong numbers and still cuts. And Reddit?

Dade: Reddit says it's moving to a logged-in-only experience, and its CEO says Google's AI Mode does not drive traffic. That's the same complaint publishers keep making. One privacy item to finish: General Motors will pay two hundred twenty million dollars to settle with thirty-six states over selling driver behavior data. Regulators are treating data brokering as a real enforcement area.

Kate: That's the update for today. Thanks, Dade.

Dade: Thanks, Kate. Patch your edge devices, and have a good day, everyone.

Kate: Have a great day, and see you Monday.
